Sinfonia in the Schools

The sound of string instruments is a rich, romantic sound beloved the world over.

Of all the instruments, the strings are also the easiest to teach, and the only instruments that can be taught at a very young age.

String programmes are the most simple, worry-free and economical to maintain.

Participation in string ensembles and orchestras fosters the development of social harmony and produces well balanced, responsible, successful citizens. At the very peak of the profession, the most revered of all instrumentalists are great string players who perform on instruments of enormous value.

A master teacher

Tokyo Sinfonia conductor Robert Rÿker is not only a great performing artist, he is also an acknowledged Master Teacher.

He has developed the Tokyo Sinfonia's "Sinfonia in the Schools" programme to set the standard for the profession. The programme combines a tightly scripted introduction to the musicians, their instruments and the music with performances of orchestral pieces providing the audience with the tools to develop a rich appreciation of classical music.

Presentations for elementary, middle and high schools levels are varied to accord with students' vocabulary, attention span, and general background.
The recommended size and position of the student audience surrounding the performers is likewise designed for best communication between performers and students as follows:

  • High school: groups of approximately 350 to 500 each.
  • Middle school: groups of approximately 250 to 350 each.
  • Elementary school: groups of approximately 200 to 250 each.

For general and experienced students

The 19 strings of the Tokyo Sinfonia are high in artistic quality, rich and versatile in programming, portable and cost effective. The "Sinfonia in the Schools" programme allows the Tokyo Sinfonia and Maestro Rÿker to provide a multi-faceted programme which addresses the general student, the experienced student, and even the extended school community of families and friends.

Special clinic and concert

If the school has an active instrumental programme, Maestro Rÿker would wish to provide extra enrichment through a special clinic in which the Tokyo Sinfonia players coach student players during their own orchestra or band rehearsal session.

As a final to the day's musical activity, there will be a public concert performance for students to attend with their parents, families and friends. Maestro would also be very happy if he could present selected students from the school as participants in the Tokyo Sinfonia's evening
programme.

The cost of such a programme for a High School of 600 students within the Yamanote line would be gross ¥1,800,000 excluding consumption tax.
