More on the Mozart Serenade, June 13

To a few musical friends

MOZART SERENADE (6/13) Next week on Friday evening from 7 pm I will be leading the Tokyo Sinfonia in the second event of our most important concert series in Oji Hall, Symphonies for Strings, this time featuring Mozart.

Mozart (read about image here) wrote a lot of truly great music, as everyone knows, hundreds of works. We will be performing for you two magnificent selections from Mozart's pen which in fact one rarely has the opportunity to hear in performance.

The delightful Haffner Serenade is a familiar title, but who has actually heard it in concert? It is rather lengthy, it was written as background music to entertain, and it calls for the forces of a full orchestra of the time. Most orchestras opt instead to present one of the symphonies or concertos. The Haffner Serenade is neither symphony nor concerto but a bit of both, and it remains altogether unjustly neglected. You will hear the Haffner Serenade in our special version for the 19 strings of the Tokyo Sinfonia. Akio Iso plays the violin solos.

Among Mozart's most sublime music are the string quintets which he dedicated to his great friend Haydn. Mozart's string quartets are performed by hundreds of quartets of string players around the world, but not the the quintets, which call for an extra player, special rehearsals, additional expense. Incredibly beautiful though they may be, who has actually heard them in concert? Our feature work is the Symphony for Strings in D Major, based on the quintet, especially arranged for the 19 strings of the Tokyo Sinfonia. This will be its world premiere.

In addition to the infectious charm of Mozart's music, we have the joy of playing this wonderful concert programme in the excellent acoustics of Ginza's Oji Hall (click for access map), where the Tokyo Sinfonia sounds at its best. Do join us. Come with a friend. Come with 2 friends, or 3; it's more fun.

Single tickets are 6,000 yen, including the post-performance artists & audience champagne reception. Group and subscription discounts are available.
